Sausalito rainbow tunnel illustration by Laurie Berger.
Art prints available in 8x10” and 11x14.”
I wanted to pay tribute to the Sausalito Tunnel as a lesser known Bay Area icon. Inspired by a 1974 photograph of the tunnel gifted to me by my brother, and five years of commuting through this tunnel in my twenties. I love this magical tunnel and it would always brighten my morning to drive out of the San Francisco fog and into the Sausalito sunshine beneath this whimsical rainbow.
Fun Fact: Originally known as “Waldo Tunnel,” the painted rainbow arches debuted in 1970 to mixed reactions in the San Francisco Chronicle. Fortunately, its colorful California aesthetic persisted and, now called the Robin Williams Tunnel, it continues to welcome everyone from San Francisco’s foggy Golden Gate Bridge into Marin’s sunny skies.
